JULY GARDENER
outdoors
THIS MONTH IN THE GARDEN
As summer heats up, take advantage of
cooler mornings and evenings to tackle
garden and lawn weeds before they
flower and produce seed. When hand-
weeding, be sure to remove as much of
the root as possible.
Divide crowded clumps of bearded
irises now. Dig clusters of rhizomes,
discard the oldest central rhizome, and
retain the younger “fingers” of each
cluster. Cut back the foliage to about
6 inches. Replant at the same depth.
Seed heads are forming on perennials,
particularly on old-fashioned varieties
such as butterfly weed,
above.
To
minimize reseeding—and weeding—
deadhead flowers as they fade or snip
off seedpods as they form. 62)
